"THIS EPISODE is SO powerful and inspiring! Listening to 2 strong, talented, independent women open up and share their vulnerabilities is inspiring beyond words. I just love listening to Dr. Vogel’s podcasts, she asks poignant questions, empathizes with her guests, and shares her vulnerabilities along the way.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN

I’ll never forget the morning after the 2016 presidential election in the United States.

It felt like every man who ever sexually harassed me had won. Every man who ever touched me or kissed me without consent won. It felt like my country had turned its back on women and collectively said, “Even if I do believe you, your pain is not significant enough for us to care. Get over it, already.” I showed up to work that week, consoled woman after woman, and fielded disclosures of pain and trauma.

In that moment, the world changed- my world changed, too.

I decided I could not stand idly by. I did not want to look back on my life and think I didn't do enough to fight back and stand up for women. That week I decided to focus my doctoral dissertation on the intersectionality of gender and leadership and began my journey to be a changemaker in my community.

As a college Title IX Coordinator, I met with woman after woman who experienced gender-based violence and I understood the failure of our education systems to prepare young people on how to prevent sexual violence.

Seeing woman after woman deal with her sexual trauma broke me open and forced me to reconcile with my experience of being raped in college.

I knew that to help these women in the highest capacity, I needed to help myself first. So I began the long road to recovery. For the first time, I looked inward and reconciled with how I was going to use this act of violence to change myself and the world for the better.

As part of my healing, I started a podcast and sexual education business called Ladybits and Leadership, to provide space for open and authentic conversations around sex, consent, and wellness.

After listening to a couple of episodes, my mother shared with me that I come from a lineage of trauma- she and my grandmother were both survivors of sexual violence. My heart broke open yet again. I was so proud of her and so devastated. She had kept this secret for decades. How many women were living with secrets and shame like this?

Storytelling is powerful. Sexual storytelling is powerful.

Although my rape does not define me, it did provide the guidance I needed to help heal others through research, teaching, and mentoring.

I began my company Ladybits and Leadership to expand and provide sexual empowerment education for the community.

I have used my platform to host unique workshops on topics such as managing the mental load of motherhood, identifying gender-based sexual harassment, supporting queer students, understanding the gendered dynamics of pleasure, and how emotional abuse shows up in intimate relationships.

Due to the success of my podcast and educational outreach, I have contributed to my community and nation, and now my educational research and work are going international!

I was awarded a campus innovator award and was invited to keynote a Take Back the Night event. On a national level, I was selected to speak at the Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education Conference and NASPA's Racial Equity and Social Justice Conference on sexual taboos in the AANHPI community. In 2024, I will be heading to Canada to work on furthering my research and I will also tell my story at the University of the Pacific's inaugural TEDx conference.

In March of 2024, I will serve as an educational diplomat researching sexual education at Vancouver Island University as a Research Chair through the Fulbright Canada.

Through this work, I have the great honor of representing Hawaii, Hawaiian women, survivors of sexual violence, and people who are tired of the shackles of gender-based oppression. Through my work, I add to the body of literature on sexual education by researching and publishing how we can add indigenous perspectives.

You are now part of this journey. Buckle up and get excited for a pleasurable ride.

With aloha and gratitude,

Sara

"Sara’s podcast touches so many feminine topics that are not talked about enough. The raw talk sometimes takes me by surprise but it’s just an example of how we should be having these conversations more. Topics that we are taught should be shameful or taboo she discusses in length and in a very nonjudgemental manner. She is open, listens, and discusses with so much care that most women never find in their lifetimes. So fortunate to have found this podcast and look forward to every new episode. Although, there is a wait between episodes it is SOOOOO worth it! The quality is 👌 . Thank you so much Sara for being so open and brave enough for those of us who don’t have our voice…. YET

"I have been looking forward to this podcast and after listening to the first episode I knew why. Everyone who identifies as a woman needs to listen. It’s so important for so many of us to release the shame that we carry and to recognize that there are lots of issues that affect women that we need to talk so much more about. Thank you, Sara, for doing this!!"

"Just finished binging the first three episodes of Ladybits and Leadership. What a fantastic, empowering, and enjoyable podcast. These are not easy topics, but the more we talk about women, leadership and our overwhelming need to rediscover (or discover) our own love of our bodies, the closer we get to a just, vibrant and gorgeous society. I’ve learned so much about myself and the amazing women around me. We’ve got this, ladies! Thank you so much, Dr. Sara."
